Wrottesley Observatory, Wrottesley, Staffordshire, England. This watercolour shows the observatory through trees from the south. The observatory was built at some point after 1841 by the British astronomer John Wrottesley (1798-1867). It was in 1841 that Wrottesley inherited his father's title, becoming the 2nd Baron (Lord) Wrottesley, and the family estate, where he built this observatory. Wrottesley was one of the founding members of the Astronomical Society of London (1820), which became the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) in 1831. Wrottesley was RAS President (1841-1843) and President of the Royal Society (1854-1858). By the 1950s, only ruins were left where the observatory once stood.
