We want to find outthe good points of men and women, of boys and girls, and ifthe faults that we see or read of are so many or so big that. Now, what made Washington great ? We admit that hehad faults; but who remembers them now, or tries to pickthem out? If you recall the life of Columbus, the Admiral,which opened this series of Childrens Lives of Great Men,you will recollect that he had very great and detestablefaults, and was capable of doing things that really good menlike Washington and Lincoln would not have done for allthe wealth of the Indies, nor all the gold of Carthay. Andyet Columbus is to-day one of the worlds great men ; hisfaults are forgotten ; only what he achieved is remembered.
