The battle of New Orleans marked the introduction ofthe rifle as a formidable arm for infantry. It was by nomeans a new weapon, for it had been invented in Germanvin 1498 ; but it had not been used to any extent in mili-tary service, mainly because of the slownessof loading. The capabilities of the rifle inthe hands of an army of expert marksmenwere, however, made so manifest by Jacksonsgreat victory that the attention of militarymen was turned towards the weapon whichhad enabled a crude army to overwhelm thechoicest troops of Europe. Yet it was not until 1850 that a practicallyefficient military rifle appeared.
