Value chain analysis for coconut fibre production and coir industry

“Coir Industry” never recognized it as “Coconut fibre” Industry. Hence never attempted coconut palm variety wise “Fibre grading” or segregation of different grades of coconut fibre contained within the coconut ‘HUSK”. Coir yarn / rope is made without considering the quality or grade of the fibres. Coir yarn is uneven yarn without any fine specification for use in high value products. Sustainability and success of any industry depends on the availability of basic raw material in quality and quantity at reasonable cost if and when required. Coir Industry, perhaps is the only industry in the world which do not recognises this fact and holds the view production and supply of suitable natural fibre or the plant (coconut palm) is not their concern. Their first activity is the collection of HUSK. Unfortunately the coir industry is not aware of the fact quality of husk from which fibre is extracted depends on the variety of the coconut palm. . Scientifically it is an accepted fact that quality and quantity of natural fibre of plant origin depends on the variety of the plant. There are hundreds of varieties of coconut palm which produces varying types of coconut fibre in quantity and quality and there are different grades of fibres viz. Coarse, medium and fine within the husk (mesoderm of coconut fjruit). This calls for coconut palm variety wise grading and segregation of coconut fibre from the husk into different grades for ‘even yarn’ of different thickness with uniform specification for high value products. Today cotton fibre and jute (hard fibre) are under Textile Ministry. Textile Ministry is the right umbrella under which coconut fibre also should have been functioning since it has potential for domestic and technical textiles and industrial applications. Unfortunately, neither the Coir Industry nor Govt. of India and others including FAO of UN recognised it as a natural fibre industry and till today coconut fibre is not given the status of a NATURAL
