Statues of terra cotta were also usual inwhat may be called the frontispiece of the roof, justas we find groups in marble surmounting the archi-trave of Grecian temples The excavations whichhave been made on the site of the Vulcian cityhave produced great quantities of these architecturalornaments, and the moulds and manufactory havebeen discovered where tliey all were made. Vulciwas famous for its statuary in the days of SenilisTullius. The necropolis covers a wide extent of ground onthe side of the river opposite to the castle. Here,as in most other places, a sepulchre had no soonerbeen excavated and rifled of its contents, than it isfilled up, and only two or three continued these, situated at the distance of half a mile over.
