In1381, Watt Tyler and Jack Straw had 100,000men on the Heath ; while in 1400, the Emperorof Constantinople was met on Blackheath by KingHenry IV. with great parade and also, in 1415, King Henry V. was met, on hisreturn from the Battle of Agincourt, by the LordMayor and Aldermen of London and 400 citizens;and in the following year, the Emperor Sigismundcame here to treat for peace between the Crownsof England and France. Henry VI., on his returnfrom France in 1431, was received on Blackheath. HISTORIC HOUSES. 33 with great pomp by the Lord Mayor and Aldermenof London ; and in May of 1428, Humphrey, Dukeof Gloucester, with 500 men wearing his livery, andthe Mayor and Aldermen of London, met Margaretof Anjou on Blackheath, and conducted her to hispalace. The followers of Jack Cade, in 1449-50, weretwice encamped on the plain of Blackheath, andon the 23rd February, 1451, many of his men camein their shirts to the King at the same place andbegged for pardon on their knees. King Henry his tent on Blackheath in 1452, when with-standing the forces of his cousin, the Duke ofYork, afterwards King Edward IV. ; and Richard,Duke of York, in the same year, came out of Walesto Blackheath, the King meeting him with 15,000men. In 1471, Falconbridge encamped here toassist Edward IV., this same King being met hereon his return from France in 1474, by the LordMayor and Aldermen of London ; while, in 1497,the Cornish rebels, numbering 6
