Earlier, as a strong tropical storm, it had caused damage and deaths in the Caribbean. It strengthened as it passed across the Gulf of Mexico, making landfall as a hurricane on the US mainland on 28 August on the coast of Louisiana. It produced a large storm surge and several fatalities. Photographed on 28 August 2012, in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA.
