An anchor, without cross bar, reversed, the arms and flukes of whichthus form a cross ; from each arm a fish is suspended. Ofcoarse but deep cutting. Found in Egypt, where it wasprobably incised. From the Greville Chester Intaglio on garnet, irregularly circular, with flat face ; \ inch in diameter. Withina surrounding wreath is a figure with out-stretched arms, in the attitude of an orante, between two animals ; doubtless it representsDaniel in the den of lions and in the same typical manneras it is to be seen on Christian glasses and other monu-ments. On either side, above his arms, is a cross. Theexecution, by the wheel, is extremely rude, but neverthe-less effective. I am not aware of a similar subject beingrecorded as upon a gem. It was found in Egypt, and isdoubtless a work of that country, probably of the fourthor fifth cent
