Mr. Searls is a gentleman ofsuperior culture and ability, correct and methodi-cal in his business and professional duties, and ofthe strictest personal integrity. The warm-heart-ed commendation of John M. Hall, of Williman-tic,in presenting his name before the RepublicanConvention which nominated him for the officeof Secretary of State, was fully justified by theupright and honorable career which Mr. Searlshas made for himself. His administration of theduties of the Secretarys office has shown him tobe amply qualified for the responsible positionwhich he holds. 19. Hon. JAMES D. SMITH, TREASURER. Hon. James D. Smith of Stamford, State Treas-urer for the current year, was appointed by Gov-ernor Bigelow, January 3, filling the vacancycaused by the death of Hon. David P. Nichols ofDanbury, who was elected Treasurer by the Re-publicans in November, 1880. The appointmentdevolved upon Governor Bigelow under the stat-ute, and was made with judicious regard for thepublic interests. Treasurer Smiths eminent fit-ness for the position has been heartily recognizedthroughout the State, and the appointment hasmet with the unanimous approval of Republicansand Democrats. It was fitting that Mr. Nicholsssuccessor should be chosen from Fairfield County,and in selecting Mr. Smith a high complimenthas been paid by Governor Bigelow to the youngRepublicans of tha
