We made red lead joints, with the addition of some other material, and have not had a leak. If you can put us right, we shall be greatly obliged to you. H. D. W. & S. From the description of the piping, it would appear that there are two 4-inch flows and two returns on each side of the house, 20x65 feet, and that they run across the end of the hauler but just how much the boiler is Welow the level of the returns, or how much slope is given to the piping, is not so clear. While nine pipes would be de- sirable for the heating of the house to 60 degrees, there should be no difficulty in securing practically that temperature with eight 4-inch pipes. The trouble is undoubtedly with the arrangement of the piping. The boiler should be so located that the lowest part of the returns is above the top of the boiler. As it is stated that there is a drop of five feet in the returns, this is probably the case, and there should be no trouble about securing good cir- culation. The piping should be ar- ranged with the flows running slightly uphill, the slope being perhaps one inch in ten feet, with the returns running downhill just underneath. MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.
