Fossil shark teeth. Specimens from L-R. Squalicorax pristodontus, Cretolamna biauriculata and Carcharias africana. The variations in the structure of the teeth show the differences in diet amongst these sharks. Squalicorax pristodontus fed on large marine animals as well as bony fish, sea turtles and also scavenged the bodies of large land dinosaurs that ended up in the sea. The teeth are serrated to allow them to shear off large amounts of meat in each bite. The Cretolamna tooth is less robust although their diet was mixed whereas the Carcharias tooth is slender and curved and shows an adaptation to a diet primarily of fish.
