Burchell’s Zebra walking towards Seneto Springs, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania. The background shows partly the 500 m high crater wall. Plains or Burchell´s Zebra, Equus burchelli. Resembling a horse with broad black torso stripes and sometimes grey stripes between them, the Plains Zebra is a very adaptable and successful grazer, native to grassland and open woodland, but depending on water. These non-territorial, nomadic animals form bachelor herds and one-male-harems, which are so stable that mares remain associated for live. The stallion defends his harem against male intruders and predators like hyenas and wild dogs.
