Earlys invasion of Marjdanin 1864, and here he did valuable ser-vice. He rallied the troops underhis command, reformed the line anddid much to retrieve the fortunes ofthe early surprise at Cedar Creek,October 19, 1864. His gallant SixthCorps first broke the strong lines atPetersburg, on Sunday, April 2, Grant in his official reportsaid: General Wright penetrated the. Horatio Gates Wright. his whole corps, sweeping everything before him, and to his left, toward slineHatchers Run, captured many guns and several thousand prisoners. Hewas brevetted brigadier-general United States Army on March 13, 1865,for gallantry in the battle of Cold Harbor and major-general for the captureof Petersburg, Va. On June 14, 1865, he received the thanks of the Connecti-cut Legislature for his efficient services in the Civil War. He was madelieutenant-colonel, U. S. A., November 23, 1865, and then served on variousengneering boards, becoming colonel, March 4, 1879, and chief of engineerswith the rank of brigadier-general, June 31, 1879.
