. Electric railway journal . Y JOURNAL. LVol. XXXIV. No. 6. Was at times insufficient for the load being carried by thegenerator, and high-pressure steam was taken in by theturbine automatically and without any hunting tendencies, the governing of the set being very steady. A load of 450kw was repeatedly thrown off and on the set by openingand closing the main oil switch, the governing under theseconditions being satisfactory in every respect. The vacuumregistered on mercury column in. at no load, and with a load of 450 kw, the turbine using exhaust steamonly. A high-pressure steam test was carried out later; the ap-proximate full load being carried with a steam pressureof 90 lb. and a vacuum of in. As in the previous testsan artificial tank load was made use of, so that the loadcould be readily adjusted to the desired conditions. Thewattmeter registered an hourly output of 728 kw, exclusiveof the motor load, for the condenser pumps, which wasequal to about 50 kw. The set was kept running at this. Rotary Part of Exhaust Pressure Turbine load till a constant temperature was reached on the gen-erator, the room temperature being 70 deg. Fahr. and thetemperature in punchings and windings being 105 degFahr., showing a temperature rise of only 35 deg. load was thrown off and on the machine by opening andclosing the main oil switch, the momentary change in speedbeing 100 , or about 3^ per cent. TOOL STEEL PATENTS DECLARED INVALID The United States Circuit Court of Appeals has rendereda final decision, declaring invalid all the principal claimsof United States patents Nos. 668,269 and 668,270, relatingto the composition and heat treatment of high-speed toolsteels. The claims in these two patents, which were issuedFeb. 19, 1901, were extremely broad, covering substantiallyall steels used for cutting tools in the composition of whichchromium and tungsten or molybdenum appear, and to allsteels heated to a temperature of- 1725 deg. Fahr. or high
