California Army National Guard's 578th Brigade Engineer Batallion and 40th Bridage Support Battalion deploy as hand crew in support of the Soberanes Fire in Monterey County. Almost 400 soldiers live at the Toro County Park base camp in Salinas during their 29 day rotation, where everything from fire safety gear, lodging and leisure is provided for them. Every morning, crews travel on military vehicles to various drop points on the fire line, from Carmel to Big Sur, to work as fire fighters and help contain the 70,000 acre fire. Once at a drop site, soldiers don their protective gear and begin their 24 hour shift by hiking miles into forest and mountain terrain, then conduct mop operations, meant to prevent fire from advancing.
