Apollo 11 lunar surface. This image was taken prior to a bootprint being made in it by US astronaut Buzz Aldrin (born 1930), the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot. Aldrin photographed the bootprint about an hour into the lunar extra-vehicular activity carried out by him and Neil Armstrong on 20 July 1969. It was obtained for analysis by soil mechanics experts studying the lunar surface.
