Tourists crowd the many outdoor restaurants under canopies along the Riva degli Schiavoni, a waterfront beside the lagoon leading to St. Mark’s Square in Venice in the Veneto region of northern Italy. The city is built on wooden platforms that were supported by centuries-old wooden stakes driven into the ground in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea off the east coast of northern Italy. Venice has no roads but a thread of weaving canals connected by pedestrian bridges. Its palaces are of either Gothic or Renaissance-designed architecture.
