The image is of the ruins of the 13th century Scottish medieval fortress of Caerlaverock Castle close to the Solway Firth on the Scottish Borders of Dumfries and Galloway with England. The double moated triangular castle was much fought over during the war of independence with King Edward I of England laying siege to the castle in July 1300. At the end of the War of Independence the castle passed into the hands of the Maxwell family who rebuilt the castle between 1373-1410. Other battles took place the last being during the Civil war when protestant forces laid siege to the castle in 1640 when much of the castle was demolished never to be repaired or re-occuppied.
