Both in his public papers and privatecommunications, Governor W. shows himself a mas-ter of language; he is fruitful in simile and illustra-tion, logical in arrangement, happy in the choice andtreatment of topics, and terse and vigorous in expres-sion. Judge W. was aCongregationalist. His opinionson all subjects were decided; he was earnest andenergetic, courteous and dignified, and at times ex-hibited a vein of fine humor that was liie more at-tractive because not too often allowed to come to thesurface. His letters and addresses show a deep andearnest affeclion not only for his ancestral home, butthe home of his adoption and for friends and
