In lexicography Americahas two great names, NoahWebster (1758-1843) andJoseph E. Worcester (1784-1865). Either is good au-thority on both spelling andpronunciation, and that notonly in America, but wher-ever the English language isspoken. Webster began as the mere maker of aspelling-book for the school-room. He was a grad-uate of Yale College, and so, too, was were independent workers in the greatfield of lexicography, but not rivals in any in-vidious sense. Websters great work first appear-ed in 1838, Worcesters in 1860. Each has passed. E. WOKCE-TEU
