Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911), British botanist. Educated in medicine at Glasgow, Hooker served as Assistant Surgeon and Naturalist on Ross's Antarctic expedition of 1839-43. He then travelled widely and published many books from his observations, the greatest being 'Flora of British India' (1872-97). Later he succeeded his father, Sir William Hooker, as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. He also joined Bentham in producing the 'Genera Plantarum', a seven-volume work on the classification of plants. He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1873.
