A winter view of the ruins of Norham Castle. Norham Castle one of the most important of the Border castles, built in 1121 by the Bishops of Durham a long and turbulent history saw many famous visitors and it s place in history though little known is significant in the Wars and Peace of the Scottish Border. Visitors have included King Edward I King David of Scotland Robert the Bruce Turner Beatrix Potter Field Marshal Montogomery. Norham until 1844 formed part of County Durham, North Durham. Famous for it's part in the Scottish Wars of Independence it lost much of it's importance as a stronghold when it fell to James IV of Scotland just before the Battle of Flodden in 1513
