Gymea lily (Doryanthes excelsa), 19th-centry botanical artwork. This is an engraving by Austrian botanical illustrator Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826), based on field sketches. Bauer travelled to Australia as part of the Flinders expedition (1801-1803). On his return in 1805, Bauer worked on producing a series of botanical illustrations of the specimens. Only three issues of 'Illustrationes florae Novae Hollandiae' were published, all in 1813, with this engraving being Plate 14 from that work.
