Some sixty families came fromMassachusetts to Livermore about that time,and the town had for its first settlers, faithfuland stanch men with an honest purpose forevery duty; men who made sacrifices for theirchildrens education, and who living in peace,read the newspapers with interest, discussedquestions of state and country, and were onlyintolerant of injustice, oppression, meannessand lying. An old resident writes: I will. ALBION P. CHASE, M. D. remember a neighborhood quarrel. I look backwith pleasure, not unmixed with pride, upontheir honest, useful lives, and feel thankful forthe lessons they imparted. The first physi-cian was Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, grandfather ofVice-President Hannibal Hamlin; the firstminister was Rev. Sulvanus Boardman, fatherof George Dana Boardman, the missionary toBurmah, in the mountains of Tavoy. Both ofthese men came from Tisbury. Mass. IsraelWashburn, father cf the noted WashburnBrothers—Israel, Elihvi and Cadwallader—whohave served their country so the first merchant. Nearly all had large district schools, with their spellingschools, their debating clubs and library(kept in the kitchen cupboard and parloralcove of the doctor), formed the AlmaMater of many a man who has served hisState honorably both in Maine and Washing-ton, the schools sometimes numberingeighty pupils of all ages, and taught by youn
