But the matter was not yet settled. A number of personswere arrested for debts owed to Cloberry and Company, and ThomasSmith (the same who had already taken part against the Mary-landers), and John Butler (a brother-in-law of Claiborne), used everyopportunity to stir up dissatisfaction. The matter finally amountedto a rebellion,and Governor Calvert, after several warnings, pro-ceeded to the island himself, with a body of armed men, to offer alittle more forcible persuasion.
