Early printing press for incunabla

An early printing press, drawn in 1520. This woodcut of an early printer is taken from an edition of John Lonicerus saying things that Augustin Alveld, or Alved, said about Martin Luther. The woodcut was made by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) and is dated 1520. The front person is the man operating the press (the pressman)' the beardless boy behind him is the printer’s devil, a boy (so-called because he was stained with black ink, or in one famous case was a black slave) who would ink the made-up type in the forme ready to be printed, using the ttwo cloth or leather balls he is holding in his hands.
