The offended governor, byverbal proclamation, dissolved the Assembly. Eighty-nine of the members, among whomwas George Washington, met in the Apollo THE MIDDLE PLANTATION. 163 room on the following day, organized themselvesinto a Provincial Convention, prepared an addressto their constituents, in which they declared thatan attack upon one colony was an attack uponall, and recommended the assembling of repre-sentatives of all the THE APOLLO ROOM. This recommendation was immediately sentforth by couriers despatched from the RaleighTavern. It was heartily commended by allthe colonies excepting Georgia. Twenty-five of the members of the conventionremained at Williamsburg to participate in thereligious observances of the appointed issued a circular to all the burgesses, ormembers of the Assembly, recommending ameeting of the whole body at the RaleighTavern, on the first day of August next ensuing. 164 THE MIDDLE PLANTATION. Eighty of the members who formed the con-vention in the Raleigh were present at theappointed time. They adopted resolutions toimport no more slaves, nor British goods, nortea; and resolved that if their grievances werenot speedily redressed, to export no more tobacco.
