When ammonia is combined with aromatics, it forms the smelling salts of the shops. Ammonia is one of the most active elements of farm- yard manure ; but, without great care, large quantities of this valuable fertilizer are lost from the farm-yard, and carried off in the atmosphere. That ammonia has a strong affinity for acids may be shown by bringing a glass rod, which has been dipped in chlorohydric acid, over a vessel containing ammonia, when a dense white cloud is seen to rise, which is chloride of am- monium.
