Congenital syphilis. Historical medical illustration showing congenital syphilis lesions in babies, including skin ulcers, rash, anal and genital warts, and blisters on the hands and feet. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It is passed from an infected mother to the foetus during pregnancy, and can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, deformities, or death of the infant. Some babies with congenital syphilis may have symptoms such as snuffles , rash, and blisters at birth, while others develop symptoms later.
