The Second Congregationalchurch (Welsh) was organized inMarch, 1868, with seventeen mem-bers. September i, 1869, Riggs, Dun-lap & Co., opened the third bankin Emporia, which afterward be-came the Emporia Savings bank,with the following directors : Maxson, Howard Dunlap,J. JayBuck, Dr. J. J. This gentleman hung his sign in Em-poria as an attorney, in iS6q, and has beenin evidence as a lawyer, Christian work-er, and in politics and every good worksince. He has been probate judge, cityattorney, and member of the schoolboard, and held other important has always been one of our most sub-stantial men, and lives in one of the bestresidences in the city. Judge Cunning-ham is widely known for his fearlessespousal of the temperance cause, for hiskind-heartedness as a neighbor, and gen-eral usefulness wherever his services wereneeded. He has been superintendent ofthe First Methodist Sabbath school forover a quarter of a century, and is amarked example of what correct livingand good work will do for a man. The bill appropriating .113,000for the running expenses of theNormal School was defeated by thelegislature of 1876. This was a se-vere blow to the school, the worstit had ever received.
