Radiat-ing in all directions fromthe top of an immensefootstalk, clothed to itsvery base with the deadleaves of former years ofgrowth, its mass of lea vesoften reach an expanseof 7 or 8 feet, the topmosttips being 12 feet fromthe ground, while risingout of this dense clusterof leaves is a huge mastoften reaching a heightof 20 feet more, thebranchlets thickly setwith pole plants. () I have seen masts onSands Key ± inches in di-ameter, though 3 inchesis the normal measure-ment. If thrive in the species will grow inthe densest tangles ofsaw palmetto and low, shrub-like vegetation, thrusting up its head de-fiantly, in lusty vigor, from the dense undergrowth. Sometimes it is.
