06/12/10 TODAY PHOTO ...With some of the nation's largest Brussels Sprout growers saying the big freeze may cause a shortage of the seasonal vegetable, one Hampshire grower, in his eighties, continues to pick his sprouts by hand - whatever the Malyon, who says he is well into his eighties, grows eight acres of sprouts at Little Brownwich Farm, Titchfield, in Hampshire. He said: "I've picked sprouts since I was a boy - the cold never stops me. This year is one of the coldest years I can remember - you should have seen us last week we were picking in the snow. We do have a machine but in these conditions it won't work well so it's best to pull them all by "There was one winter, about 50 years back that was colder - icicles were hanging off my coat then. .."The sprouts should be alright - I don't think the frost will harm "We pick about thirty to forty, twenty pound nets each day - it depends on the orders we get "We start the harvest in September and go right through to March but obviously it's our busiest time now." ..To keep out the bitter cold Ron wears a pair of worn-out water-proof trousers wrapped with bin liners held on with bailer twine.
