'Carte des Indes Orientales'. India, Indochina & East Indies. HOMANN, 1748 map

Artist/engraver/cartographer: Johann Christoph Homann / Homann Heirs. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original outline hand colour/color and decorative title cartouche. The map details South Asia and Southeast Asia including the Indian subcontinent (India & Ceylon/Sri Lanka), Indochina (present-day Laos, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia & Singapore), the East Indies (present day Philippines and Indonesia including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi/Celebes and Borneo), and southern China with Taiwan/Formosa. The map includes the mythical Lake Chiamay in vestigial form, a cartographic error which had once been believed to be the source of the 5 great river systems of Southeast Asia (the Dharla, the Irrawaddy, the Mekong, the Chao Phraya & the Bramaputra). Portuguese Goa is also highlighted.
