(>ne of the notable feat urea of the Old Department was the number of social organizations which sprang from it. The men were. not merely satisfied withbeing banded together for the protection of life and property from fire, butdesired to form clubs and societies outside of the jurisdiction of the depart-ment. These organizations took the form of targel companies, chowder clubs,. BALL TICKET : AMER1CUS ENGINE COMPANY NO. 6. and so on. The idea was to perpetuate the good fellowship which arose in theengine house. The associations gave opportunity for agreeable relaxationafter the arduous duties of the department had been attended to, and theexcursions and parties were participated in by friends of the members. Theyare by no means an insignificant part of the social history of the people of NewYork, and therefore should have some notice in a work of this kind. Below isa pretty full list of these clubs, with the name of the captain or leader who haebeen identified with them. Engine Company No. 33 (Black Joke), be it notedhas the honor of having been the first company to inaugurate a targetexcursion : From Engine Companies.—No. 1, Hudson Guards, John K.
