Asian hornet research. Overhead view of the variety of insects caught by traps such as this beer-baited one. Such indiscriminate traps catch other insects as well as the one being studied here, the invasive Asian hornet species Vespa velutina (the largest wasps seen here, several at upper centre and lower right). This hornet, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004, and has been spreading, attacking people and preying on native honeybee species. Photographed at the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHM) in Paris, France.
