Brain tissue. Light micrograph of a section through human nervous tissue from the brain. There are three visible nerve cells (orange bodies) surrounded by associated dendrites. The nuclei appear as lighter patches at the centre of the cells. The nerve processes are of two types: a single large axon transmits signals to other cells, and many branching dendrites serve as the cell's sensory receptors. Grey matter in the brain consists mainly of cell bodies and branched dendrites. Grey matter in the cortex of the cerebrum is involved in conscious thought, memory and sensation. Magnification unknown.
