It is not contended that they are entirely 14 ENGINEERING exempt from the danger of explosion. On the con-trary, the percentage of explosions of water tube boil-ers in proportion to the number in use is probably aslarge, if not larger, than it is with boilers of the shellor return tubular type, but the results are seldom sodestructive of life or property, for the reason that ifone or more of the tubes give way the pressure isreleased and the danger is past.
