Germany/Japan: Philipp Franz von Siebold (17 February 1796 - 18 October 1866), German botanist, physician and traveller. Portrait by Kawahara Keiga (1786-1860), 1820s. Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold was a German physician and traveller. He was the first European to teach Western medicine in Japan. He obtained recognition for his study of Japanese flora and fauna. He arrived at Dejima Island in 1823 and stayed in Japan until 1829 when he was expelled for obtaining maps of parts of the country, and act forbidden by the Tokugawa administration.
