The commissionin its account. calls attention to the many advantageswhich will follow the completion of the subway and recom-mends an extension of the system so as to admit of thetransfer of steam cars between the northern and the south-ern depots. The report contains illustrations showingthe development of the incline on the Public are also several diagrams of the projected work,and the advantages of the system over the present method. By means of a sub-subway at junction points,grade crossings are avoided and the danger of collisionsis eliminated. This arrangement also obviates delay andincreases the capacity of each track. The length .of- the subway from the entrance near the junction of Shawmut Avenue and Tremont Street to theUnion Depot will be about one and one third miles, andthe distance from the Boylston Street entrance to theUnion Station is about the same. The total length ofsingle track will be about five miles. There will be four tracks on Tremont Street along theline of the Common. Each one of the tracks will have agreater capacity than either of the present surface tracks,as the subway tracks will be absolutely free from the inter-ruptions and delays to which the surface
