According to Greek mythology, Danae and her son Perseus had been set adrift in the sea in a box (seen here in this 1901 illustration) by Perseus' grandfather, to whom an omen had foretold he would be killed by a son of Danae. The tide washed the box up on the shore of Seriphos, one of the Cyclades islands. Dictys, a fisherman and brother of Seriphos' king, rescued the pair.
