LIVER, ANATOMY


Model of the anatomy of a part of the liver and the gallblader of an adult human body (posterior view). The liver has been turned in order to visualize its posterior side. The right (largest) and left lobes are separated by the falciform ligament (in white). Grooves delimit the quadrate lobe (c) carrying the impression of the stomach pylorus. The liver is irrigated by the proper hepatic artery (in red) and the portal vein (f, in mauve). The detoxified blood flows through the hepatic vein (in blue), which empties into the inferior vena cava (blue vessel filled with red). The bile, produced by the liver cells, is carried to the gallbladder (11, in ochre) through the common hepatic duct (e, in ochre) and then the cystic duct (d). The gallbladder lies in a depression of the liver. It concentrates and stores the bile, which will next be released into the duodenum in order to contribute to the digestion.
