he Wai-O-Tapu thermal area is a 18 square kilometers highly active geothermal area with lots of collapsed craters, hot and cold pools of mud and water and steaming fumaroles including two geysers and some sinter terraces. It is located in the northern part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone just 27 kilometers south of Rotorua in New Zealand. Cream-white sinter is formed from silica, orange coloured sinter from antimony compounds, red-brown colours normally come from iron compounds and purple from manganise oxide, Sulphur-Iron colloids are greenish. The Bridal Veil Falls are the lower end of Primrose Terrace, the largest sinter terrace remaining in New Zealand. Wai-O-Tapu ist eine 18 Quadratkilometer große sehr aktive geothermale Zone mit Einbruchskratern, heißen und kalten Seen aus Schlamm und Wasser, Fumarolen, Geisiren und Sinterterrassen. Das Gebiet liegt etwa 27 Kilometer südlich von Rotorua im Norden der Taupo-Vulkanzone Neuseelands, einem Supervulkan, der noch vor 1900 Jahren eine große Eruption hatte. Creme-weiße Sinterterrassen entstehen beim Ausfallen von Siliziumverbindungen, Antimon-Verbindungen sind dagegen knallig orange, Eisenverbindungen rostbraun, Manganoxide violett und Schwefel knallig gelb, während Schwefel-Eisen-Kolloide eine grünlichen Farbton haben. Die Schlüsselblumen-Terrasse entsteht, wenn die im 74 °C warmen Wasser des Champagnerpools gelöste Kieselsäure beim Verdampfen des ablaufenden Wasser ausfällt. An ihrem unteren Ende fließt das Wasser über die Sinterterrassen des Brautschleier-Wasserfalls in die Tiefe.
