Roman Britain invaded. 14th-century manuscript illustration and verse telling the story of the invasion of Roman Britain by Scots and Danes in the 5th century. This invasion occurred at around the time of the Roman withdrawal from Britain after nearly four centuries of rule. This illustration is from a mid-14th century abridged version (the 'Egerton Brut') of the 12th-century verse chronicle 'Roman de Brut' by the Norman poet Wace. This poem was itself based on 'Historia Regum Britanniae' by Geoffrey of Monmouth.
