British Medical Services in the Second World War Army Blood Transfusion Service: Driver J Chalmers enjoys a bottle of beer after giving blood at No 2 Advanced Blood Bank in Lanciano, Italy in December 1943. Six men work night and day giving blood transfusions to the wounded and taking blood from donors of all ranks who volunteer. The ready availability of fresh blood and plasma was of critical importance in saving life. Blood banks supplied blood and plasma to Field Transfusion Units (FTUs) which worked with Casualty Clearing Stations (CCS) and Field Dressing Stations (FDS).
