At another point the report, referring to the develop-ment of student character and the formation of properhabits, says:— At the University of Toronto, after every laboratoryexercise the apparatus which has been in use by the students. Light and Power Plant, Physics Building—Universityof Toronto is put away. If it is bulky and the table large, the appar-atus is placed at the far end of the table and lined upwith it. A neat unbleached muslin covering is then placedover it. In other words, each section leaves the laboratoryfree for the use of any section that comes after it, and theremarkable part of this is that in this particular laboratorythere is so much space that there is no necessity for itsconservation. It is done, I was informed, largely out ofconsideration for the development of the characters of thestudents and to teach them habits of neatness. I havenever seen such a well-ordered building anywhere. Anyindustrial establishment with which I am familiar can learnfrom the Physics Department of the University of Torontoin the matter of housekeeping. Every other laboratory Ivisited had more or less to criticise in this respect. The policy of the University of Toronto in populariz-ing the study of physics also
