GENERATION AND DISTRIBU-TION PLANTS It must be understoodthat the main generatingstations of the canal are atthe Gatun Dam at the At-lantic end and Miraflores at the Pacificend of the lake. There is also a smallerstation at Pedro Miguel at the end of theCulebra Cut. To get the idea clearly intothe minds eye: after coming in from theAtlantic Ocean by Colon through LimonBay the canal is lifted at Gatun by a. Mechanism of the Index on the Control Board whichShows the Operator the Position of the Chain Fender,which will Prevent a Heavy Ship from Ramming into andInjuring the Gates POPULAR ELECTRICITY and the WORLDS ADVANCE 1235 series of three locks to thesummit level 85 feet up; itthen goes through GatunLake and the Culebra Cutto Pedro Miguel where thelock lowers it 30*4 feet to alake ending at Miraflores atwhich point in a series oftwo locks it is lowered theremaining 54^ feet to thesea level of the PacificOcean. There is by the waya tide of 2^ feet on the At-lantic side and a tide of 21feet on the Pacific side. Without going into thetechnical details of thetransmission, transforma-tion and distribution sys-tems which bring the cur-rent to points where it canbe utilized in the variousoperations, it may be brief-ly stated that some 90,000horsepower from the hydro-electric power plant atGatun Dam and 60,000 horse powerfrom the emergency turbo-
