Euclid (active 300 BC), Ancient Greek mathematician. Euclid lived and worked in the Greek culture of Alexandria, Egypt. He is known as the 'Father of Geometry' and for his Euclidean geometry described in his book 'The Elements of Geometry' (shown here). Euclid brought together previous mathematical work and extended it. His method of proving theorems by deduction is a key principle of mathematics. Euclid's work has dominated mathematics for over 2000 years. Some errors have been found in his work, but most of his findings remain valid. This oil painting, by Spanish-Italian artist Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), dates from the period 1630 to 1635.
