Staff from Schonhut's butchery factory, Rawmarsh, South Yorkshire, 1955. Artist: Michael Walters

Staff from Schonhut's butchery factory, Rawmarsh, South Yorkshire, 1955. In this photograph, Mr George Schonhut can be seen on the far left of the group. He was the grandson of the founder, who relocated from the German city of Obernhof. The family settled in the South Yorkshire town of Mexborough in the years prior to World War I. Despite some persecution stemming from the German origins of his name, Mr Schonhut refused to anglicise the family name. The butchery business flourished for three genreations as both retailers and as a wholesaler to other businesses in the area. Here, the staff of his Rawmarsh factory (located near Rotherham) assemble for a group photograph.
