Cash machines at Sainsbury's supermarket in London. Supermarkets and convenience stores will no longer have to pay millions of pounds in business rates for cash machines outside their shops, following a ruling by the Court of Appeal. Since 2010 supermarkets and convenience stores have been liable to pay rates on the machines and the Court of Appeal ruled that about £300m has already been charged and will now have to be refunded. The shops that will immediately benefit include Sainsburys and Tesco, which had taken the case to appeal.
