The first-mentionedreturned home in the year 1861; and,during the financial stress of the wartime, the devoted two who remainedsupported themselves by the translationand other literary work for the Chinesegovernment. Another provision was the foundingof a Book Concern, an arrangementwhich yielded later to another bettersuited for the particular conditions ofthe South, namely the appointment ofan agent who should contract for a sup-ply of such books as were needed by theChurch, and keep them on sale at cer-tain centers and on the most moderateterms.
